Baracknophobia (βαράχνη "Barackne" · φοβία "Fear") is a disorder resulting in an abnormal fear of Barack Obama. Do you have it? Take the latest poll to find out...
Stimulus or Swindle-us?
Answer these 10 questions to find out where you stand...
1) Taxes: millions of workers get a "Make Work Pay" $500 credit at $9.62 a week. Will this help?
Hell no! It's a drop in the bucket. Businesses need tax breaks so they can reinvest in significant ways -- not joe six pack.
It doesn't sound like much, but if every person buys an extra pack of smokes or hits a movie it could help.
Absolutely. We're talking billions of dollars here folks. Obama said he'd cut taxes for 95% of americans and he just did!
2) Health Insurance: Unemployed? The govt will pay 65% of your health insurance premiums for up to 9 months. Stimulate?
No, this just gets Obama one step closer to nationalized health care. The unemployed still won't have any money to buy anything because guess what: they are unemployed
Yes. It's more money in everyone's pocket and even if it doesn't stimulate the economy it is tragic that anyone would go uncovered.
Maybe. The insurance company doesn't lose revenue, and people stay covered and avoid huge out-of-pocket expense for emergencies.
3) Infrastructure: $90 billion to repave and rebuild America's aging backbone. Stimulate?
Of course. More projects equals more jobs equals more money for workers and a stronger economy.
Maybe. It will create jobs in construction and I like the idea of broadband everywhere.
No way. These large scale government projects take years to plan and complete and waste millions of dollars. Sounds like pork.
4) Energy: $42 billion in credits and grants for users and makers of renewable energy, to create green jobs, rebuild the power grid and clean water programs. Stimulate?
Sorry but no. Some guy installing a wind turbine in BFE ain't going to help. Obama strong armed a few campaign promises into the bill.
Yes. This creates thousands of jobs and takes us in the right direction that Bush botched the last 8 years.
Maybe, these incentives might help the manufacturers sell more stuff and the projects can't hurt the construction guys.
5) Schools: $54 billion to keep teachers on the job and improve schools. Good idea?
Sadly no. I love teachers as much as the next person but fixing up schools just doesn't boost the economy RIGHT NOW when we need it.
Yes. Obama delivers again: job creation, improved schools with more resources, and smaller class sizes!
Probably. More people working should help and 'no child left behind' means better education in the long run.
6) National Debt: the $789 billion stimulus package will jack the federal debt to about 3 times last years shortfall ($1.6 trillion). Reaction?
Sounds alarming but what else can we do? Hopefully when the economy gets rolling again then U.S borrowing can decrease.
Idiotic. We can't spend our way out of a recession with borrowed money. Our grand-kids-grand-kids will pay for this spree!
Just like Obama said: "Some people call this a spending bill, what do you think a stimulus package is!?" The New Deal fixed the 1930s depression and this will too.
7) Environment: $9.2 billion to shutter abandoned mines, protect water supplies, and build energy efficient visitor centers. Help?
I like clean water and I don't want to fall into an abandoned mine at my favorite nat'l park. Remind me how this helps the economy? Lobbyist fat.
Well, this should create 100,000 jobs over two years, but I'm not sure this is the proper bill for these agenda items. Does clean water stimulate the economy?
Are you against clean water? In just a month, Obama already changed the government to focus on the important priorities and create jobs at the same time.
8) Higher Education: Increases tuition coverage for low income families, $15 billion for research, and offers up to $39 billion of the $54 billion state stabilization to modernize college facilities. Winner?
I see the trend here: fund projects that create jobs. Will it work? I don't know but I hope so.
Duh, Yes. Higher education is the lifeblood of this countries future. Increasing access to the poor raises the bar for the entire workforce and hence boosts productivity.
Oh no, here we go again creating 'make-work' and offering more handouts. Sounds like campaign-trail bribery, how about reduce the ridiculous tuition costs for everybody?
9) The Poor: More foodstamps, $25 extra bucks for unemployment, and $87 billion for cash strapped states to bolster Medicaid.
Right on. This immediately boosts the economy and helps those who need it the most. Go Obama!
This money actually will get spent right away and boost the economy, but does boosting welfare just increase our debt down the road? I'm not sure.
Ouch. None of these stimuli help big business, who by the way, pays most of our damn salaries! Do you want a check from a real corporation or a handout from the U.S. Treasury?
10) Big Brother: "This package melds an unprecedented level of new spending and tax cuts, and it marks an extraordinary intervention of government into people's lives." --forbes.com
Oh dear. No tax cuts for medium and large business? No defense spending? No development of nuclear energy? What about solving the credit crisis? Good bye Corporate America. Hello Animal Farm.
Finally! Obama and the Dems hold the votes to get a historic and sweeping plan in place that rids us of Bush-onomics!
Hmm, Obama promised bipartisanship but quickly found out the stark party lines don't blur. I wish they'd all agree but it'll probably work out.
